I STILL HERE/Family Tree Maker 2019 Person Notes and Research Notes/Records found on Ancestry Library Edition

 I STILL HERE!!! I know that it has been awhile since I blogged anything on doing genealogy research. My last post was in 2019 but I have still been really busy working on my family tree. Just been forgetting to blog about what I have been working on.

I have spent lots of time working in Family Tree Maker 2019 created timelines for everyone in my family tree in the person notes. Also, transcribed all records with the information that has been learned from that record. The transcription of records is in bold to stand out in the timeline to know what has been found. Types of records transcribed is newspaper announcements (birth, engagement, wedding, anniversary, death etc), family bibles (also noted who’s handwriting it’s it), church records, census records, military records, etc.

 In the research notes in Family Tree Maker 2019, I have noted that the facts have been noted and linked from all sources, also have created a research log (I did use the posts on my blog to make notes of what has been done). In the research log going forward keep track of the searches done and what records have been located.

In March 2023, I had to have carpel tunnel surgeries on both wrists, March 1^st for the right wrist and March 15^th for the left wrist. So I was one handed for a month and was off work while I was healing from the carpel tunnel surgeries. I also was not able to use the computer while I was healing from my surgeries. Once I was able to go back to work at the end of April 2023, I wanted to ease back into using the computer so I wouldn’t have issues with my wrists again or cause my carpel tunnel to return.

Researching at St. Catharines Public Library

Well on Saturday October 14 I spent the day at the St. Catharines Public Library doing genealogy research on Ancestry. Currently I am using the Ancestry Library Edition to use the St. Catharines Public Library’s subscription to Ancestry to save money, then I just email to send the records home and enter the information on my family tree and source it myself.

I had a very successful research day at St. Catharines Public Library. I found my maternal grandfather (Roger Henry Dagenais) in the 1931 Census of Canada, also found Roger in the Canada, Voters Lists 1935-1980 for 1974, also with my maternal grandmother (Elizabeth Dagenais), Gary Dagenais (uncle), Linda Dagenais (mother), and Rosemary Dagenais (aunt). I found my paternal grandmother (Jean Gertrude Marshall) in both the 1921 Census of Canada and 1931 Census of Canada.

Dagenais: Family Of Ten Left Homeless

While working on the family tree, going thru old photos and memorabilia. I found the following newspapers article from my mother's (Linda Marie "Dagenais" Dixon) side of the family. About a fire that left the Dagenais Family homeless. Read the newspaper articles for more.

Transcription of text in the document (Family Of Ten Left Homeless):    Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Dagenais and their eight children were left homeless Thursday as a result of a fire which gutted their home at 526 Craig St., Pembroke.    

The blaze broke out while Mrs. Dagenais was downtown shopping with her three youngest children. The five remaining children were all in school. Mr. Dagenais is employed with a construction company in Toronto and is working presently in Welland, Ont. He is unable to get home until Saturday morning.   

 The contents of the Dagenais home were destroyed and the family is left with only the clothing they were wearing. The contents were only partly covered by insurance.

The fire broke out when an electric heater short-circuited in the downstairs of the two-story frame house. The house is owned by the Caisse Populaire Ste. Jean Baptiste in Pembroke. Firemen were able to confine the fire to the inside of the house but fire, smoke and water damage was heavy. Firemen estimate the total damage to be in the neighborhood of $4,000.

NEIGHBORS SPOTTED FIRE

The alarm was turned in when a neighbor spotted flames leaping from the corner of the roof and phoned the Pembroke Fire Department. Friends and neighbors tried in vain to rescue some of the Dagenais belongings. The Dagenais children have all been placed in the homes of relatives of the Dagenais.

Frank Lynch, speaking for the Pembroke welfare council, said today there had been an excellent public response to the appeals for help for the burned-out family, but they still needed a place to live, and some cash was needed for temporary rent and expenses.

"They need accommodation, but it isn't easy to find a place with room for eight children," Mr. Lynch said. "We have looked at the number of small places, but none was suitable. We would appreciate hearing from anyone with a larger dwelling."

Cash donations can be made at the Bank of Nova Scotia and all other donations at the rear of the Town Hall.

Mr. Lynch said donations of clothing, mattresses and bedding has been received, with Doran's and Zeller's store cooperating in the outfitting the children this morning.

Roger Henry Dagenais & Elizabeth Shirley Ignace

Roger Henry Dagenais was born on July 18, 1928. He was married to Elizabeth Shirley Ignace. Elizabeth was born on February 26, 1931. Roger and Elizabeth had eight children together they are Gary Dagenais born on April 4, 1953, Linda Marie Dagenais (my mother) born on September 29, 1954, Raymond Dagenais born on December 18, 1955, Rosemary Dagenais born on January 15, 1956, Corinne Dagenais born on April 19, 1959, Cathy Dagenais born on May 2, 1960, Theo Dagenais born July 14, 1962 and Tom Dagenais born on July 14, 1962.

Roger passed away on October 25, 1978. Roger is buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.
