Found News Clippings Using The Microfilm Machine At St. Catharines Public Library

I have been doing lots of research on the family tree at St. Catharines Public Library, spending full days doing research using the microfilm machines at the library. I have been looking for birth, marriage and death announcements for relatives.

Once I find the news clipping I am printing a copy at the library it costs $0.50 to print a copy. I also write down the newspaper published in, the date and page.

If I already had a copy of the news clipping I just looking to find the newspaper it was published in, the date of publication and page.

I have found the following from the microfilm machines: (The newspaper clippings will be posted in the next couple days)
  • Elizabeth Shirley Dagenais death announcement (Published by St. Catharines Standard, Feb 13 2003, p. B6)
  • Edward L. (Ted) Dixon death announcement (Published by St. Catharines Standard, Aug 9 1999, p. B4)
  • Alice Anne Dixon birth announcement (Published by St. Catharines Standard, Aug 29 2013, p.C18)
  • Bronwyn Jean Dixon death announcement (Published by St. Catharines Standard, Oct 6 2006, p. A8)
  • John Marshall Dixon III birth announcement (Published by St. Catharines Standard, Feb 21 2009 p. B8)

What is a First Cousin Once Removed?

In real life, family is family and cousins are cousins. But, in genealogy (and especially in genetic genealogy), it is important to understand exactly how you are related to someone. Correct understanding of the difference between a first cousin, a first cousin once removed, and a second cousin can make the difference in your genealogy research and in your interpretation of your AncestryDNA. Join Crista Cowan for a quick look at how to understand it and keep it all straight.

Ancestry Library Edition Genealogy Class Update

I took the Ancestry Library Edition Genealogy Class at the St. Catharines Public Library on May 11, 2017 from 2pm - 3:30pm. In this class we learned about Ancestry.com but from the Ancestry Library Edition which can be used for free at the St. Catharines Public Library which is their subscribe to Ancestry.com and it has a few difference from Ancestry.com which you would used at home with your own subscribe.

We learned how to search on Ancestry from a basic search, advanced search with exact match options, explore by location search feature, search by selecting a category or specific collection example Census Records or Birth, Marriage or Death Records, card catalogue search, how to use search filters to narrow down your search results, how to print records (when printing from the library it costs money), but if using the Ancestry Library Edition at library you have the can send the documents to yourself by email to print at home.

This video explains how to sent the documents home to yourself.

Olive Tree Genealogy Blog: DNA Testing Solves Mystery of Young Girl Who Disappeared on Titanic

Olive Tree Genealogy Blog: DNA Testing Solves Mystery of Young Girl Who Disap...: In April 1912 Montreal financier Hudson Allison with his wife Bess and their two children, Trevor, seven months, and Loraine, two years of age, journeyed across the Atlantic on the Titanic. After the ship sank, Hudson's body was the only one found. Little Trevor was supposedly rescued by a maid but no one knew what had happened to Lorraine and her mother Bess.

Fast forward to 1940 when Helen Kramer came forward claiming to be Lorraine. This was never proven and when Helen died in 1992 her claim died with her. 20 years later Helen's granddaughter Debrina claimed she had more evidence proving that Helen was indeed Lorraine Allison.......
